The main character/hero wants something, takes action but has some conflict which leads to the climax of the film and then finally a resolution happens (the end)
Features that can make a short film rememberable:
- A interesting and new plot line but be simple, only one main incident or conflict.
- Characters that we feel for by being shown backdrop of their life. Show don't tell, for example in The Iron Giant, you see a picture of a man in a pilot uniform getting in a plane on the Hograth's bedside table. Nothing is said about his farther but with that one shot of that plot the audience knows his father daed in war.
- Some surprise or twists to the plot, for example like the film The Sixth Sense by M. Night Shyamalan.
- Have a theme and a genre, something the director and writer wants to say about the character or situation.
Features that can make a short film unsatisfying:
- It is confusing, don't make the plot over complicated
- it feels like the beginning of something bigger, it did not stand on it's own.
- It is too long as the audience losers interest.
- It is not emotionally satisfying.
Key questions:
- What is the film about?
- What is the genre?
- Who is the protagonist?
- Who is the nemesis (that has opposes your protagonist?)
- What is the driving action to your story?
My favourite short films that inspire me.
